In the summer of 2024, I had the great opportunity to do my practicum at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing. UM Scholars was an internship program where we participated in research projects depending on our mentor. My project observed Seniors in 4 Parkview senior living facilities and provided quick care in between doctor visits. This group was called the Wellness Clinic and the care included blood pressure, nail care, minimal wound care, vaccinations, and more! We conducted cognitive tests to check the functionality of their brain and check ups to survey their physical and mental health. Along with this, we kept a record of their medications to ensure proper care. With this data input, this allowed me to learn many different medications used and see them in effect. For my project, I saw how one of the medications, anticoagulants, have an effect on residents living there. Ultimately, I learned that lower income residents with heart diseases don’t have/can't afford the necessary medication. I also learned that some residents are taking anticoagulant medication with no cardiovascular diseases. This problem can be fixed with our knowledge of public health! To inform older people about the medication they are taking, I believe the Wellness Clinic should host information sessions. This way they can educate these seniors to prevent other health problems down the road. This can help achieve the 3rd sustainable development goal, “Good health and well being” while also being educated on their health.
