For my practicum, I had the privilege to work in two different locations: Darien province in Panama, as well as Fallsgroves Orthodontics in Montgomery County, MD. The purpose of my practicum was to contrast how different rates of health literacy impacts oral care. During my week in Panama my team and I were able to provide free dental care to over 100 patients, fundraise money for dental supplies, and distribute dental hygiene packets to those in need. At the Orthodontics office I was able to watch and assist with a variety of dental procedures as well. My practicum gave me an insight as to how areas of low health literacy causes people to be more susceptible to developing caries, periodontal diseases, and other oral healthcare problems.
