For my practicum, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant course at Greenbelt Careers Institute and then continued on to work for Homewatch Caregivers in Bethesda Maryland. While working, I help patients with daily tasks (such as bathing, walking, eating, toileting, etc.) This is connected to public health because I am able to provide holistic care to every patient possible, I help to combat the shortage of all healthcare professionals (CNAs have the most patient time of all), and I am able to promote health equity and equality through practicing it myself. Overall, I learned that providing detail-driven care can genuinely affect the patient and their progress, therefore it is essential to go above and beyond. This job is more important than just making money, when people get caught up in the day-to-day cycle it can be easy to cut corners and make excuses. However, in healthcare, the patient is the most crucial aspect of your job.
