For my practicum, I worked as a volunteer and shadow at LeeAnn Physical Therapy in Elkton, Maryland. The mission of LeeAnn Nelson Physical is “to provide the highest quality treatment utilizing a holistic, hands on approach by a highly experienced team of skilled PT’s in a healing, pleasant environment. Our goal is to maximize function, accelerate pain relief and allow you to return to an active life”. As a volunteer and shadow, I was able to sit in on the one-on-one physical therapy sessions and learn about the different ways that can physical therapy can build strength and treat pain. I worked with Dr. Heather Wray and my specific responsibilities included demonstrating exercises, providing hot and cold compresses to patients, and educating the elderly about the importance of physical activity even if it is limited due to pain. Also, the physical therapy office required everyone to wear facemasks and provided a safe and clean environment by educating the staff and patients about sanitation and cleanliness. While building relationships with the patients and helping them strengthen their body, I discovered my passion for physical therapy and decided to change my major in order to prepare for physical therapy. It was so incredible to be apart of the LeeAnn Nelson Physical Therapy staff and I am glad that I finally have discovered my passion for my future lifestyle.
