For my Practicum I volunteered at A Wider Circle. A Wider Circle is a non-Profit organization that serves the greater Washington, DC region. They offer services to those who need a little more help than others. The warehouse has showrooms that offer home decor, furniture, bedding, clothing for adults/children, everyday items, and a food pantry. During my experience working with them I sorted through many different donations. Specifically during my time I sorted through childrens clothes/shoes, houseware, wall art, mirrors, children’s toys, and games. What I learned during my experience is it is important to prioritize effective communication which allows a welcoming environment which is crucial when dealing with public health initiatives. Another takeway is that reusing and donating items contributes to sustainable practices and promotes environmental health, while helping those in need. The Public Health Connection that connects with my practicum experience is that A Wider Circle allows those in need a foundation of self-sufficiency and more importantly supports the sustainable development Goal to end poverty.
