For my practicum, I worked at my local dental office, where I assisted the dentist with preparing equipment and helped patients with scheduling appointments and with other concerns. What I observed from my time here was that a large number of people had been neglecting their oral care by not scheduling regular dental check-up appointments and not being consistent with taking care of their oral health. I learned that this was due to overall low oral health literacy in the community, as many people are unaware of the risks that neglecting oral health can have and why it is important to have regular appointments with professionals throughout the year. By informing and educating patients of the significance of consistent oral care and providing discounted dental services, we aim to increase the low oral health literacy levels in the community and aim to reduce the number of severe oral health issues seen within the community.
