For my practicum, I participated in the Atlantis Fellowship, completing over 90 hours of medical shadowing in hospitals across Bologna, Italy, and Tarragona, Spain. Following AAMC guidelines for clinical observation, I rotated through a variety of medical specialties, including OB/GYN, neurosurgery, the Stroke Unit/ICU, orthopedics, and gastrointestinal medicine. I observed a wide range of patient care, from routine consultations like OB/GYN visits, vital checks, and ultrasounds to complex surgical procedures such as Deep Brain Stimulation for a Parkinson’s patient and cesarean sections in the delivery room. I also spent time in stroke recovery and rehabilitation units, gaining insight into the importance of continuity of care and interdisciplinary collaboration in improving patient outcomes. This immersive experience taught me the value of patient-centered care, cultural competence, and teamwork within healthcare settings. Most importantly, by witnessing diverse patient-provider interactions, I discovered that I am passionate about becoming a healthcare professional who leads with empathy and compassion. I want to not only treat illness, but also care for the whole person. This practicum deepened my understanding of how public health intersects with medicine, not just through prevention and treatment, but through access to care, cultural sensitivity, communication, and the social determinants that shape health outcomes. Experiencing two different healthcare systems firsthand expanded my global perspective and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a medical career grounded in equity, advocacy, and a more holistic view of the patient’s journey long before they enter the exam room.
