For my practicum, I worked at Brooke Grove Retirement Village in the assisted living department. I worked in a house with sixteen residents who were diagnosed with Dementia, out of the sixteen I was responsible for eight residents at a time. I assisted with activities of daily living including, getting dressed, using the restroom, brushing both teeth and hair, cleaning up, eating, and transportation. I have expanded my knowledge within the healthcare field and gained extensive proficiency in using assistive technology, such as the Hoyer lift. I have also learned the importance of the healthcare field and the real difference that it may bring to so many families and individuals. Aging is a critical part of life, by providing proper care for elderly adults there are wide-scale public health implications. This care improves an individual’s mental, physical, and neurological health. In addition, this work can generate great improvements within health literacy and better promote the importance of the healthcare field.
