For my practicum project, I was an intern at the LatinX Health Initiative, specifically working under the asthma health management program. The asthma health management program provides free workshops for parents and caregivers in Spanish to assist families with young children in managing their children's asthma-related symptoms. As a fellow intern, I was able to provide participants with knowledge and awareness in helping kids self-manage their asthma symptoms. As well as communicating to family members in both English and Spanish to comprehend specific metrics like daily intake of certain medications, how to use an inhaler, and coping mechanisms to maintain optimal health with physical activity. This organization and program aided in reducing health disparities among LatinX low-income communities. A important lesson I was able to learn from the work I did was how undervalued communicative efforts for those with different cultural backgrounds can have on their health care status.
