For my practicum project, I interned and tutored children in the Latino Student Fund (LSF) Tutoring Program at the STAMP building at the University of Maryland. The LSF tutoring program focuses on providing academic support to students of socioeconomic disadvantage who are, primarily, latino in Washington DC, Prince George’s county (PGC) and Montgomery county (MC) areas. I would tutor students between the grades of Pre-k and 11th grade that attend this program. As well as intern for the coordinator in the PGC area in recruiting new tutors, hosting orientation presentations, researching other nonprofit organizations for tutoring opportunities, and creating multiple education accounts for each student in all of the sectors in which this program resides. I learned that providing academic support and engaging with students impact their lives tremendously despite how young or old they are. I’ve witnessed children in this program go from being concerningly below their reading or math level for their grade to becoming advanced in their education levels for their grade. Nobody really talks about the impact tutoring has on children and this experience opened my eyes to the impact it has, no matter how little or easy the subjects being taught to these children are. Tutoring will help students, especially those who are POCs, to be able to close the achievement gap compared to students who are white. This would allow for those students to be more immersed in the education system and lead the way for latino students to earn more college degrees and succeed in their future education. Helping my community be apart of the new generation of excellent students has been an amazing experience.
