For my practicum, I worked as a research assistant in the Lavender Lab at the building of Biology and Psychology at the University of Maryland. There is limited research regarding sexual, gender, minority youth of color and how their unique experiences impact their mental health outcomes. Therefore, I have been working on a large, NH-funded research project which is investigating the relationship between sexual, gender, minority youth of color’s unique experiences and substance use and misuse. We aim to understand how minority stressors, discrimination, and structural oppression impact their mental health and coping outcomes, furthering research to better create interventions that mitigate adverse mental health outcomes. As a young adult of color who is passionate about the lives of LGBTQ+ and children of color, I have always wanted to be involved in research that will lead to change and bettering the lives of this population.
