IFor my practicum I was an experience leader for an Alternative Breaks Experience to Los Andes Nature Reserve in Guatemala. I worked with a group of participants to rebuild and repaint the community’s school while learning about how the community promotes environmental sustainability throughout the reserve. In this experience I learned about how the reserve creates clean energy through hydroelectric power and organic self sustainable soil throughout the whole estate. Furthermore, I found a better understanding of the importance of community efforts in order to create important environment change as I saw everyone come together to take part in their sustainable ways of living. Through this experience it was emphasized that environmental factors play a significant role in public health, as they can impact air and water quality, and overall well-being. Lastly, engaging with the community to promote sustainable living practices created a stronger sense of community involvement and empowerment. I could see how these strong community ties are essential for addressing public health issues, as they create a collective action with support.
