For my practicum, I worked as a medical intern under Dr. Desai at Desai Medical Center located in Ellicott, MD. Dr. Desai is a internal medicine doctor who receives patients of all ages. My work under him included triaging patients, charting patient information, communicating with his patients, keeping paperwork up to date, and emailing patients. A lot of my responsibilities involved using an electronic medical record platform called ICMed; this is where all online patient information and communication was done. I became interested in the affect technology has on the health of his patients. I found that when patients have access to their own health records and information, they are able to stay up to date and take the necessary steps to better health. Technology will eventually reduce morbidity rates significantly as patients understand their needs and can communicate efficiently with their physician.
