For my practicum project, I worked as a medical assistant at Total Access Pediatric Urgent Care, with a focus on influenza in pediatric patients. I completed administrative tasks, including communicating with pharmacies and other providers and registering patients, taking vitals, and running various laboratory tests. Through my time at this office, I learned the importance of communication in medicine, especially when treating and working with younger patients who may not be able to clearly express pain. To combat the flu season, our office provided flu vaccinations and shared infographics promoting health literacy both in the office and through social media platforms. Although it is at the community level, this experience allowed me to promote SDG 3, related to good health and well-being, and promote herd immunity, which is an important prevention method among school-aged children. Being able to work in this setting and contribute to my community in this way was an invaluable experience.
