For my practicum project, I worked as a physical therapy aide at an outpatient physical therapy clinic where we provided rehabilitative treatment to a wide range of patients with a wide range of injuries. As an aide I worked closely with many of the patients by helping them go through their treatment plans as well as preparing different treatments including heat, ice, stimulation, traction and more. By spending this time in a physical therapy environment, I learned a lot about the kinds of healthcare people have access to and the types of problems people face that can cause injuries, traumatic and chronic. This helped me gain a broader perspective on how important physical therapy is in the world of public health and how not only rehabilitative measures can be beneficial, but also preventative measures.
