Acción Callejera: Promoting the Rights of Youth in the Dominican Republic

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

Presenter: Lindsey Bayne, Public Health Science, Global Public Health Scholars

For my practicum, I participated in a service learning project in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Through the program, we worked with Accion Callejera, an organization in Santiago that works to keep Hattian boys off the streets, and provides them with resources such as food, a place to shower, and structured activities. While there, our group of students refurbished their storage room in order to organize their food supply. We also repainted and cleaned a school at one of the organization’s satellite locations. This program allowed me to engage with a community that I was unfamiliar with, and emphasized a lot of social factors that could influence the health of an individual. While working to fix their infrastructure, I was able to learn a lot

about how to assess the needs of a community and act appropriately.

I really enjoyed your presentation! It's wonderful that you were able to make a school project so meaningful. While you were working with the children, were you able to notice a good change in attitude in any of them throughout the program? Was there any child that you bonded with while you were there?

I like how you were able to combine a fun experience abroad with service learning. It seems like you were able to learn quite a lot, including about health, culture, and people, from your experiences, and make a difference in the Dominican community and children as well. Were you able to make any stronger connections to the children through your experiences from your Grandfather's Dominican heritage?

I love how you were able to participate in a study abroad program that you could personally connect to! Did you happen to live with a host family that had young boys in Accion Callejera? What was the most interesting thing you learned about the culture?
