For my practicum I will be completing a volunteer internship at Washington Hospital Center. At the hospital, I will participate in assisting nurses and physicians during their daily activities, such as patient interaction. Additionally, I will be observing doctors and other occupations throughout the hospital. From this experience, I will gain a better understanding of how this hospital, which is a large medical institution, interacts with the surrounding population. As this hospital serves a large population, I will learn more about the public health impact this hospital has. This practicum will also give me a new insight on how a hospital functions both as a health institution and a business.

Great job on your presentation! I volunteered at VA hospital in Baltimore last summer and it was a very knowledgeable experience for me too. It helped me decide that I wanted to pursue a career as a physician assistant! You mentioned that a lack of knowledge about basic medical care can cause the system to be overwhelmed with patients, how would you go about improving health literacy and medical knowledge to avoid this problem?

I like how this started because of the aging population, however it is important to note that currently due to the Covid-19, it becomes even more important to see how access to healthcare can still have quality care during a surge of medical cases that require care. How could these solutions be used as a preventative measure from the overwhelming surge that comes with unprecedented pandemics? Is there an ability to scale up these options in order to accommodate this when the time comes again, or will it be likely that we will experience similar reactions due to lack of resources?
