Presenter: Jillian Watt, Public Health Science, Global Public Health Scholars
This summer I interned with the Build Haiti Foundation as their development intern. I traveled with the same organization in 2017 on a ten-day service trip which was where I discovered the field of public health. The non-profit focuses on the community of Camp Coq in northern Haiti. I did most of the work from home but I went to the office every Friday to meet with the board members. The organization focuses on the pillars of environmental sustainability, education, public health, and entrepreneurship. I helped to develop a new website and promotional materials to demonstrate these pillars. I also helped organize a student service-learning program to raise funds to build a well and transport pipes while educating the students on the Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, I worked on grant research to fund future public health projects.
Excellent presentation that demonstrates how your practicum has a clear connection to global health and why you chose it. Your presentation adds depth to your already engaging poster. You have learned a range of skills that benefitted the organization and now will be useful in your future role with the state department!
How do you think that the effects and long-standing impact of COVID-19 on the economy and healthcare system of Haiti will impact the implementation of your intervention?
I really like your project and admire all the great work you did during your internship.
My questions are:
Specifically what type of educational materials for sanitation practices did you work on?
What topics did the Cross-Cultural Leadership Camp curriculum consist of?
I think it's really cool that you've been able to go beyond your initial service trip to Haiti and have found ways to make a difference from home. How difficult has it been for BHF to develop sustainable methods for providing water security and sanitation practices in Haiti?
Its so cool all of the programs you have helped develop during the time you've been with the Build Haiti Foundation! How does the foundation determine if the educational materials have been effective when teaching the children? Where were your main sources of fundraising when raising funds for the water security project?
