For my practicum, I worked at the Bullying Prevention and Mental Health Promotion Lab at the School of Psychology at the University of Maryland. I was a part of project ARISE, which focuses on the experiences of Chinese, Korean, and Filipino families during COVID-19. We aimed to understand how perceived racism and racial discrimination contribute to mental illness and the burden of disease among Asian-Americans. We also analyzed how perceived racism would affect the way parents talked to their children about race, otherwise known as ethnic-racial socialization. This data will help inform interventions and policies to support Asian-American youth. As a first-generation Chinese-American, I have witnessed firsthand the racial discrimination and disparities that have been exacerbated by COVID-19. I have always wanted to be involved in research and be able to effect change in my own community.
