For my practicum project, I was presented the opportunity to intern at a neurology practice in Fulton, Maryland. The practice is called Center for Brain and Neuro Care. At this practice I serve as an intern for Dr. Ruwani Gunawardane. I am in the medical office once a week for either 4 or 8 hour time periods, depending on what my schedule permits. My tasks while in office include, scanning and attaching patient files such as lab and radiology results; screening patients over the phone and at the door, as part of the Covid-19 pandemic protocol in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus; shadowing the doctor on cases when patients permit student interns an opportunity to learn; and researching the various neurological conditions and treatments that are observed. By attaching patient files, these documents are readily available to the doctor within the patients records, allowing for efficient access and review of the records when needed. The screening of patients helps keep all medical personnel, patients, and visitors safe from potential infection. The knowledge gained from shadowing the doctor has helped, and continues to help expand my knowledge of various neurological conditions, within the U.S. and globally, alike.
