Translation of an RNA Plant Virus and its Global Health Impact on the Citrus Industry

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

Presenter: Claire Jacobs, General Biology & Neuroscience, Global Public Health Scholars

For my practicum project, I will discuss how a citrus greening disease will impact the lives of many people all over the planet as a background for my research. I will discuss not only how this citrus greening disease is killing many citrus plants all across the globe, but will also eventually lead to a deficiency of vitamin C across the planet which can lead to diseases such as scurvy. In the other part of my practicum project, I will explain the work that I did over winter session and over early spring semester where I helped out in a molecular genetics lab working to stop citrus greening disease. I will explain the research that I was doing with a plant virus, the different protocols that I used, and possible results that I would get.

This was really interest, the presence of plant viruses on crops never even occurred to me when thinking of their ability to grow. How would the weak germ extraction have been done if you had the chance to perform it?

This was an excellent presentation!! For someone whose only lab experience has been biology and chemistry lab, you did a fantastic job explaining your work in the lab so I could fully understand what you were doing! I also had never heard of this plant virus before and this is essential research being done as vitamin C is essential to our bodies.

Claire,

You did a great job explaining your process for people who have not had the same lab experiences. It was also interesting to make connections between plant viruses and COVID-19 and how pertinent virology in general is right now. I am curious about your experience in the lab. It sounds like you had to do some of the work over because it was not going as planned. Was that frustrating for you? Or exciting to try to problem solve each round?
