Externship with the National Center For School Mental Health

Presenter: Kevin Liu, Computer Science, Global Public Health Scholars

My practicum project is an externship with the National Center for School Mental Health. While there are many different things I do on a day to day basis, one of the focuses of mine is using data analysis and other technology (as I am a computer science major) to help their department find ways to better improve school Mental Health. I will do tasks such as data transposition, create flyers, research grants and funding for further projects, taking notes from meetings with leaders in school mental health, and etc.

Hi Kevin!

I think it's so interesting that you want to use technology to impact public health! The intersection between computer science and public health is one that isn't talked about. Do you want to continue working in the field of mental health specifically? If not mental health, then what do you want to focus on?

Hey, thanks! I don't really know right now, unfortunately only larger foundations seem to be paying for high levels of computer science with mental health services so it seems that if I do continue working with public health and computer science it would be at a really big and broad company, rather than a foundation focusing on certain things.

I think that it is so cool that you get to use your love and skill in computer science to contribute to research in the world of mental health! Are you going to continue mixing your passion for public health with computer science?

Hey thanks! I hope to be able to continue mixing public health with computer science in the future. I am not really sure if I want to do it through things like data visualizations or more so with analysis, but hopefully over time I will be able to decide.
