The Greenbelt CARES program provides many free resources to the immediate Greenbelt community like counseling, education, referrals and information for families in need. I specifically am working in their vocational/educational program which provides free GED classes (high school diploma equivalence), ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for adults, group tutoring, as well as individual tutoring, for students in kindergarten through high school. For individual tutoring, I am primarily responsible for creating lesson plans for younger students and helping them accomplish their schoolwork. For ESOL classes, I assist adults in practicing their English through readings, worksheets and exercises to widen their knowledge in English vocabulary and grammar.
Hi! I really appreciate this project because I believe this will greatly help those that are struggling. This is definitely very important. Was there a language requirement for the students that were tutoring the people? For example, it is said that predominantly African American & Hispanic/Latino communities were served, so is a specific level of fluency in Spanish or other languages required?
Hi Phoebe. Your project is definitely important to many of those who struggle with learning certain subjects or need help learning English, especially this year. These skills that teach will certainly make a large impact on all of the people who take advantage of the services and can also help people get better jobs. Are there options to only teach specific subjects or certain age groups? What are the requirements for volunteering?
