In the fall 2021 semester, I worked with the Maryland Reading Program. The Maryland Reading Program is a branch of the Maryland Mentor Program that provides free mentoring services to local elementary school students in Prince George’s County. Its goal is to improve first and second-grade students’ reading and writing skills through one-on-one mentoring once a week. During the duration of my practicum, I created custom lesson plans for each mentee based on their level of reading and writing to help them gain the skills necessary to be on track with their grade level. While working with the Maryland Reading Program, I learned about disparities impacting low-income schools, such as insufficient resources. These disparities may ultimately lead to poor health outcomes due to a lack of quality education. In addition, through my practicum experience, I learned strategies such as personalized learning to help fill in the gaps for students who struggle with keeping up with their curriculum. I also obtained a broader understanding of health as an interdisciplinary field and how education plays a significant role in students’ health.
